Day 10/11: Florence

For the first time since leaving Goes Nate and I spent 2 days in one location. We enjoyed strolling the streets of old Florence and taking in all the history. The first day in Florence involved the Uffizi Museum (the offices of the powerful Medici family). The museum held art from Michelangelo, Rafael, daVinci, and many other famous artists. We walked up a hill to enjoy the view of the entire city and waited for sunset. That evening we had another typical Italian dinner…pasta.

The next day was did some more touring of downtown. We went inside the Duomo which was one of the first domes built. We climbed the 466 stairs to the top for a breathtaking view of the city. Even my knees were a little shaky by the time we ascended the narrow windy stairs to the top! One lady ahead of us got too scared and had to turn around. Another highlight was visiting Academia which held Michelangelo’s status of David. One great perk of traveling in wintertime is that the legendary 3-hour lines to see the statue were non-existent and we walked right in! We almost missed David since the previous day there was a strike at the museum and we had to wait until the morning before we left.
