We made it! An awkward night train and little sleep couldn’t keep us from enjoying Venice. We arrived in the intriguing city and started with a Grand Canal tour. There literally are no cars in the city, only every imaginable king of boat. We saw garbage boats, refrigerated boats, and even a DHL boat. Nate and I toured the Basilica San Marco and the Doge’s Palace. We also went through a couple museums. We went to the top of the bell tower for an incredible view of the city. Many gondoliers tried to sell us a ride in a gondola, but we were not interested due to the high cost. From there we wound our way through narrow pedestrian-only streets of Venice. Following a map would have been impossible, so we relied on random signs pointing to major landmarks. We stopped at the Rialto bridge…the famous grand bridge spanning the width of the canal. That evening we browsed the streets of Venice and got some local food. Yup…you guessed it…pizza! The most common pizza there is the margharita (basically cheese, sauce, and oregano) named after queen Margherita.
